An énergie Fitness gym is to open at Wellington Square shopping centre in Stockton-on-Tees following a deal with Stessa Leisure, which is developing a health club portfolio in the North East.

The 7,000 sq ft gym will occupy just over half of the space formerly occupied by a Lidl supermarket, which closed on lease expiry 12 months ago to relocate to a larger store at Yarm Road. Planning for D2 leisure use on the vacant unit was secured earlier this year.

Stessa Leisure has signed a 10-yease on the unit at a commencing rent of £40,000 pa. The Newcastle-based health club group was set up last year to acquire franchises and new space for gyms trading under the énergie brand in the North East. This will be the group’s fourth site, with ambitions to grow to at least 10 in the next five years.

Andy Evans, a director of Stessa Leisure, said: “We are delighted that we have found this opportunity to operate one of our health clubs at Wellington Square. We believe the town centre location, high visibility and footfall make it very exciting. We are aiming for a Jan 19 opening, and can’t wait to get started.”

HRH Retail and Brassington Rowan, which represented Wellington Square owner Lunar Stockton in the énergie Fitness deal, are in negotiations with potential occupiers for the remaining 6,500 sq ft.
